Meteor Hits Russia!

On February 15th 2013, a meteor streaked across the sky and exploded over the Ural Mountains in Russia. With the power of an atomic bomb, its blast shattered many windows and injured over 1,100 people, including over 200 children. Over 3,000 buildings
were damaged with their windows broken. The event strongly frightened many Russians, and people claimed that the world was coming to an end. Many of the people who were injured were cut by sharp glass that flew from the windows when the meteor hit.

The meteor was about 10 tons and 50 feet wide and it came into the Earth at an exceedingly fast speed of 30 km per second and shattered into pieces about 18-22 miles above the ground. Before it hit, it blazed across the horizon, leaving a long white trail which people could see from 125 miles away.

The explosion occurred around 9:20 AM and people were out and about. Alhamdulillah, no deaths were reported but unfortunately many people were injured and were in need of serious attention. People stayed strong and were patient while they waited for family members to return back to them. It was a very close call and a scary one indeed!
